The office building rising at 86 Chambers Street in Downtown Manhattan was completed in 1907 with a design by E.H. Faile & Company. The building, also known as Tower 270 or the Arthur Levitt State Office Building, replaced the headquarters of Chemical Bank and housed the Manhattan Project from 1942 through 1943. The Manhattan Project developed the atomic bomb during World War II and operated its headquarters on the building’s 18th floor.
