The 802,000-square-foot Downtown Manhattan building at 26 Broadway used to house the headquarters of John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company. The landmarked building located at Bowling Green in the Financial District was also the home address of Alexander Hamilton and his family in the late 18th Century.
The original Standard Oil Building was constructed in 1885 and designed by Francis H. Kimball. The building then underwent various modifications and expansions, most notable in the 1920s in a project led by Thomas Hastings and Shreve, Lamb and Blake. Hastings is also known for designing the Cunard Building, later the Standard & Poor’s Building, across the street at 25 Broadway.
Standard Oil of New Jersey moved to Rockefeller Plaza in 1946 and sold the building in 1956, and the landmark building now houses various companies in the financial services and law industries.
